She knows what to expect
I see it in her face. Disappointment. She has come to expect words of hurt, not hope. Words degrading her spirit. Lies told to her each day. You are nothing. You can't make it. What a loser you'll become. He tells her of love while reeling from hate. He makes plans with her heart and always comes late. Makes fun of her feelings and business of the day. It isn't as important as the stories he will tell. He'll tease her and pretend that he is listening then respond with words that aren't needed to talk. Calls her slow, unable to think or react. To this it is true for her feelings are numb from the heartache she's known. To react would mean reason to care or compete. Ah, but to think, she can still do this and do this she does. She thinks this isn't worth all the misery implied. She thinks she is worthy to be thought of as a ruby. She thinks it is futile to stay here for more of what there is to offer for why should she stay she knows the next move and what to expect.
