We could have been history.

Tonight, we attended visitation for my husband's uncle. It was held in Nashville across from Vanderbilt University. We arrived a few minutes early, just in time to enjoy intimate moments with dear family members. Some we had not seen in years. Some we just spent time with. Some not as well known. Others too much known about. As I stood there, by my husband's side, but also by my own, I watched the history of family life being written and explained by each living member. They all have THEIR stories. They all have THEIR memories. They all have THEIR interpretation. I realize the course of our life hasn't been the smoothest sail. I realize our time together hasn't been perfect. I realize the history we have written has had victory, defeat, confusion, clarity, anger, compromise, visions, dreams, accomplishments and resolve. However, above all of these things is the history we write today. We are here. I am here standing beside. I know these people and they know me. Regrets of course. Forgiveness given. Acceptance and acknowledgement. Yes, I know, things could have been different. I know we could have written different words on our pages. But, we are here. We could have been history. Instead, we are watching this part of the chapter unfold in the middle of OUR history book we are still writing together. We could have been history, but we are still choosing to keep on writing.
