A fern, a nest, my overdue patio cushions. Why should I worry?
If you read my blog, you know I ordered patio cushions about two months ago. Well, they still have not arrived. My vision of this wonderful outdoor atmosphere to dine in the evening has yet to come true. After a few frustrated phone calls, I realize the cushions will arrive when they are ready and there is really nothing I can do about this delay. I had purchased three large ferns to add to the decor and placed them beside my empty furniture in hopes it would at least look like an inviting place to sit and visit during the summer months. One morning as I was watering my plants I noticed a small brown bird fly lowly across the deck, she landed and continued to look at me. As I watered one of the ferns I spotted a small, perfectly formed nest with 5 eggs, pale blue with coffee colored spots. I immediately notified the household. Everyone came to see the nest with the five eggs. It became a point of interest. Each morning we get up and check the nest. Finally, last week, the birds hatched. Hard to believe this tiny bird can be responsible for five children in such a small house. The couple works very hard. They fly out constantly providing food for these huge mouths that pop open at the slightest movement in the branches of the fern. As a much needed, quick thunderstorm, popped up, so did the wind. In the turbulance, the nest fern was blown off it's stand. As I ran outside to check on the baby birds, I found the mother sitting on the nest with her wings spread out protecting her babies from the rain. How amazing! My grumblings regarding the patio cushions seemed so trivial. My evening dinners on the deck, quickly melted in the falling rain. I think about the many times I lose my faith. I become discouraged or confused. I fuss when my plans don't turn out as desired. I become flustered if a crisis occurs. As I looked up the information on this little, brown bird, I found them to be a "House Finch." I like that name. This small nest, formed out of twigs and leaves has taught me valuable lessons. The provision of a fern, the hard work of making a home, the careful tending to the eggs, the protection of wings when the storms come, give me more than the new patio cushions could ever supply. Who knows? The "House Finches" probably wouldn't have chosen my fern if we had been busy eating dinner on the deck and think about what we would have missed.
