John Daly has gripped a few too many and ripped more than a fairway.
My husband is always recording our favorite programs so we can steal a few moments and watch them together. It was 60 minutes that left a lasting impression this week. John Daly was interviewed. The tormented, talented, entangled, embittered, tow-headed, golf professional. I am always drawn to the real story. As John was interviewed, it became evident he is battling a handicap far greater than his golf stroke for par. He is endearing with his brutal honesty and yet, I know his truth lies deeper than the words he spoke. His large following is due to his human weaknesses....alcohol, gambling, poor impulse control, divorce, and the uncertainty of his play on the greens. As I looked at his weathered, battered face, I could still faintly see a young boy sitting behind the endless cigarettes, bottles of Jack Daniels, cans of Coke and failed relationships. From the agony of losing a putt, to the tears of joy streaming down his dried desert of losses, I saw him. A man. Battling more the weight gain effecting his swing. More than the loss of millions or losses of marriages. He is nothing more than a fragile child. As the interview continued John said something that rang within my heart, "I'm not sure I want to live a long life, cause life can be so tough and difficult." How sad. Words stronger than his trademark, "grip it and rip it." Long life...he is just 45.
