Say the blessing Bo.

My husband asked our daughter to say the blessing tonight and then recounted a funny story about my mother. You know the story of how we met on the sidewalk and such. I was in a serious relationship with a guy back home when I met Bo. Well, not really. Anyway, we had only one date and it was time for the Thanksgiving holidays. With a few days off from school and we were both headed to our homes, he suggested to stop by and meet my parents as he drove home. I had told my parents about him sort of and as always there was some reservations about the new guy thing. The introduction went very well and my father was always the friendly parent. He knew Bo's dad and taught him at Huntland, (that's another blog) so they made small talk and things seemed to be going quite well. My mother offered food. We never did eat anywhere but around the round table in our kitchen, except for special meals then the dining room. My mother prepared ham and cheese sandwiches with the famous Mr. Bob's grocery ham that was sliced ever so carefully and wrapped in white butcher paper. We sat down, myself, Bo and my mom. What happened next is remarkable. My mother held out her hands for us to say the blessing and bowed her head, "Now Bo you say the blessing." Not will you or could you, YOU SAY THE BLESSING, and she never looked up. I sat there choking. Feeling the reddness climb up my neck and face. Wondering why on earth I let him stop by. I wondered, "could he pray out loud. He sure seemed like a nice gentleman on our one date. Sincere came to mind. Surely he could find a few words to say." Slowly, in his ever deep, definite voice, he managed to say thanks, and offer blessings to my family. We raised our heads. I finally started breathing again. I saw the twinkle in my mother's eye. She thought she could get him. He looked much too good with his fancy black leather jacket. Fancy car. From a fancy town. Maybe even a fancy name, to have the faintest idea how to pray and maybe afterall, she may have been right. But, he withstood the test. He quickly learned the rules. Amazingly, he asked me out for future dates. He never ran from the tests my mother gave on occasion and when she took her last breath....she told me "we were fortunate to have such a love as ours and she loved Bo like a son." Now, that's a blessing.
