Elizabeth.

My middle name is Elizabeth. I am not sure why my parents chose this middle name for me, but I have always liked it. Today, my advent devotion, is about Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary. Two words jumped out at me, in regard to Elizabeth...dedicated, devoted. Elizabeth was barren, without children. This was shameful in those times. She endured gossip, public whispering, and personal hardship, yet she chose to remain loyal to her husband and her God. She is known for being a faithful woman and mother. My mother would tell me, "a good name is greater to be chosen than riches or fame." What is a good name? When our children were born, we did not face the dilemma of choosing their names, we already knew. I think their names are strong, with history and meaning. I even like their initials. The naming of a child is simply the beginning. To teach faithfulness, devotion, loyalty, and commitment, requires living by example and offering constant prayers of humility for directions and guidance. I have failed many times, even with a strong name like Miriam Elizabeth, but even through failure I can teach our children the importance of believing, hoping, remaining devoted to God. Today, I realize even more that my parents gave me a good name. A well thought out name. A name with history. A name chosen only for me. They named me with the intentions of their fourth child fulfilling God's calling for my life. Right now, say your name, your spouse's, your children's. Commit all your ways, thoughts, actions and goals to Him. A good name. What greater name than to be called...faithful, devoted, loyal, committed and loving. Have you thought about your name? What name are you giving your children?
