Until the last sprinkle.

We made them!!! The simply wonderful traditional Christmas sugar cookies. My sister drove down from Nashville to share in this festive tradition that I started 22 years ago. With sugar dough flying. Flour dusting the entire floor. Butter, flour, salt, vanilla, eggs and a dash of baking powder. Simple, pure ingredients. Every color of icing mixed to decorate each cookie with absolute fun. We talk. We laugh. We remember funny stories about our parents. We cherish what we have. We share a turkey sandwich, chips and Dr. Pepper. We make our pretty trays of our handy work. We nibble on the broken ones. We fall exhausted into the kitchen chairs to enjoy "a cup of really strong coffee", my sister would say. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I'll probably still be vacuuming up sprinkles and crumbs. I still have a few presents to buy. But, you know what? The most rewarding part of this season, each year, is making this simple recipe, making a huge mess, buying my crystal plates at Big Lots or Goodwill. Wrapping the clear wrap with a pretty bow around the small plate of cookies and writing on the card.....From The Majors'. The joy of sharing this small amount of love and fun with other people makes my Christmas every year. Start a tradition. Help your family see the beauty and the treasure of making something to give away. It will bless your heart. It will change the atmosphere in your home. It will slow the fast pace the world brings to your door.....for you must take the time to mix the few, simple, ingredients...cool the dough...roll it out...cut the cookies... and decorate. Sugar, flour, vanilla, eggs and baking powder....the most important.....LOVE making it for others to enjoy.
