Always ask.
Last night my son informed me that he would be leaving at 7:30, in the morning, to scrimmage another team. My husband suggested we go to Waffle House to eat breakfast before he leaves. It sounded like a great idea to me; however, my son did not really seem too crazy about the idea. Anyway, I set the alarm to wake me and my husband, just in case. Well.... at 6:40am my son came into our bedroom to ask if we were getting up to go eat. I responded that the alarm had just gone off and we were getting up. HELLO! Thank goodness I set the alarm. Thank goodness for the "just in case stuff". Thank goodness he really wanted to go. We ate. I was nervous about him being late for the bus. He ate as slow as ever. My husband chuckled at my worrying. A few football tales were exchanged. I enjoyed looking at our young fellow across the table with his wet hair, half opened eyes from sleep, and the deliberate process he takes to eat a meal. With a "to go" cup of sweet tea, he pulled out of the parking lot to head for the school. The time was 7:25am. After my husband and me finished our meal we drove past the school and saw our son stepping onto the bus. A Texas melt patty, hashbrowns, and sweet tea. A hot, summer, Saturday morning. A yellow school bus pulling out of the parking lot. 20 minutes spent with our son. 20 minutes listening to his slow conversation. Worth every second. Worth every minute. I am so glad my husband mentioned the Waffle House thing. So glad he spoke up. So glad he asked. It never hurts to ask. Always. Ask.

I'm glad you're back writing. You have a gift for making the ordinary moments in life be seen as the beautiful gifts they are.
