Coach your team, dad, but always be my fan.

Yesterday, our son had a JV football game. We traveled to Franklin Ct. We thought we had everything worked out, the logistics and such until I found out it was an away game. My husband coaches a younger league of football boys and their practice is from 5-7pm. It became evident that my husband was concerned as to what he should do. When our son came home from school to grab a bite to eat before boarding the bus, my husband dicussed the matter with him. When my husband asked our son what he should do, the response, "dad go on and coach your team." Our son made the decision. My daughter and I headed to the game. We enjoyed it. I even wrote the tackles down, like my husband does. Later, when everyone was back home and settling down for food or homework I went into my son's room to talk with him. General stuff. Parent-teacher conferences, grades, football, etc. As I got up to leave, my son said, "mom it killed dad because he missed my game, didn't it?" I turned to see the huge grin across his face. I replied with the truth, "you know it did." Maybe this was more important that his dad going to his game. Knowing, that missing his game was a very hard decision. We both laughed, and my son stood just alittle taller. We both knew his biggest fan was standing on another field, as he taught young boys how to play the game of football. Although miles apart, there was no distance between their hearts and when that first snap took place......his dad was there.
