When your home is quiet....what can you hear?

One at the lake skiing and one at the movies. It is strange. It is surreal. No teenagers. Just two adults, us. My husband and I. We've taken a slow, smooth drive through the narrow roads enjoying the warm summer evening. No music. Not much conversation. Just us. No place to be. Nothing really to do. Just the familiar hum of the famous Infinity gliding effortlessly down the newly lined roads and eventually to our driveway. Very comfortable. Very simple. With our Sonic drinks in hand we learned we were locked out of our house. Never needing a house key as there is always someone at home to unlock the door. Not the case tonight. We stand in the driveway, sort of numbed by the soft, relaxing roads. Once we are inside, it is still quiet. Seeming to be larger than I remembered. My husband turns on the evening news. Channel Four is our favorite. I could do a load of laundry. I probably won't. The kitchen is clean. Our two terriers have found their spot to sleep. It's all going to be fine. You see...the sounds may change, our children will leave, but we can take this ride and simply be....us.
