Foreign communications
Last night my son and husband were playing poker with the change collected from everyone's pockets. We have a big plastic water bottle that we drop all the leftover pennies and quarters in. While they were playing, I asked my son if he had thought about what he would like to be, his career. He responded quickly with foreign communications. I was stunned. I did not even know what this mean't. I did not even know what kind of job this was. Bill laughed at me, as always, and said, "now you're worried aren't you mom?" Well, frankly yes. I felt off guard. Unprepared. Uncertain. How could he want to do something I knew nothing about? He continued on with his description of foreign communications. I had to trust him as I knew no different. He said it is a very important job to have. I realized something in that moment. Bill, my son, wants a job that requires a difference, a challenge, unusual. He says his favorite class is French. Interesting. A young man coming from two parents born in Tennessee, with no ability to speak another language in any form. He is young. He has many more days to decide what his career field will be. He may never be a foreign communication person. I want my son to be what he needs to be in order to feel satisfied that he has chosen his place. No matter what, to be honest, have integrity, be dependable, trustworthy and make a difference. Take time to ask your young person what they want to be. It could be very foreign or very enlightening.
