Mine That Bird.

I love watching the Kentucky Derby. Today wasn't an exception. With amazement and wonder, I watched the race and once again was left breathless. Having had horses most of my life I understand these creatures that can be so full of will and determination that it cannot be completely understood by casual onlookers. I watched with my breath held, as a smaller than the others horse, not yet three years old began the descent to the inside rail. Last place. With the slit of light beckoning this 9800.00, wish and a prayer, he slipped unto the inside lane. Without so much as a brush of air between he and the next horse...he leaned his head straight forward to cut the wind. He felt his jockey commanding the strength, yet to be called upon. Unassuming. Unknown. Traveled 21 hours. From somewhere near Mexico. No fancy caravan. No press waiting to get a look. A trainer and his horse. He made his name with that dash to the line. Reporters scrambling. No interesting details to say as research had not been done. He wasn't a favorite. A pick of the day. He was simply the smaller one in the bunch. Did not cost an arm or a leg. But, wasn't his entry into this traditional day a grand one? They mentioned the Sea Biscuit remembrances. The story of the horse with such a big heart. The second greatest race in 135 years. The tears of joy flowed unto the jockey's face. The trainer unable to keep composure. The proof of unpredicted victory sparkled in the eyes of the animal purchased for 9800.00. No one told him he wasn't expected to win or his price was too cheap. He just ran and left us breathless with wonder.
