A babe laid across my chest
Warm, tired, we both needed alittle rest.
Fresh new air filled the room.
A life.
A birth.
A cry to be heard.
I did not know
All there was to learn.
The work involved.
Love that would grow.
A son.
A daughter.
Words do not explain.
I could not imagine all the joy that began that day.
From Dr. Seuss books..."read just one more and stay."
Battery operated jeeps.
A pink Cinderella dress.
Endless bath times.
Carter pajamas were the best.
Sweet smelling lotion with a sprinkle of powder.
Rocked them to sleep
Till the arms could not keep.
First day of school
First day of college.
Cheer outfits from Santa.
A varsity now tumbles.
Trials, hurts, victories and defeats.
I tried to stand there waiting
To catch a glimpse of each chance
To be their mother.
Sat down by their bed while their prayers were said.
Cook a favourite meal, or cookies instead.
Trips to the Sonic for our famous blast.
French fries and stories that seem to still last.
Mother....I just did not know.
The love I could feel...the love that could grow.
I cannot imagine my life without this.
I remember the wet kisses, a hug around my neck.
A journey so precious it has been.
I am so thankful
So blessed.
I just did not know...
What mother truly meant...
Til they laid our sweet babes in my arms and my heart.
